Former President Donald Trump and his family are still, in the year 2024, all in on crypto. It’s costing them cash and credibility. On Tuesday night, the X accounts of two Trump family members—Lara and Tiffany—posted scam crypto links after getting hacked.
“This is a scam!!!” Eric Trump, Lara’s husband, said in his own post on X after the incident. “@LaraLeaTrump and @TiffanyATrump‘s Twitter profiles have been compromised!!” According to Eric, Twitter worked fast to delete the scam posts and restore control of the accounts to their owners.
The now-deleted post from Lara looked a lot like any other crypto tweet. “I’m excited to finally be able to speak on World Liberty Financial, the project I have been working on alongside my husband [Eric Trump,]” it said. “Our goal at World Liberty, is to utilize our governance token on Solana, $WL, to support our DeFi lending protocol.” The post went on to describe the crypto and ended in a link that, allegedly, funneled people to a scam website.
World Liberty Financial is a real crypto project backed by the Trumps. “ALERT: Lara’s and Tiffany Trump’s X accounts have been hacked,” it said in a post on X. “Do NOT click on any links or purchase any tokens shared from their profiles. We’re actively working to fix this, but please stay vigilant and avoid scams!”
The embattled crypto project is the brainchild of Trump’s sons and four crypto heads who previously worked on a project called Dough Finance, according to Coinbase. Dough Finance was hit by a hack in July that drained a wallet of almost $2 million thanks to a vulnerability in its code. CoinDesk sorted through World Liberty Financial’s white papers and its GitHub and discovered code lifted directly from Dough Finance.
The entire family seems to be working on promoting the project. Barron is listed in the papers as the project’s “DeFi Visionary.” Trump himself promoted it in an August 29 post on his X account.

On August 22, Donald Trump Jr posted a link to the project’s Telegram account above a photo from the assassination attempt on his father. “For too long, the average American has been squeezed by the big banks and financial elites. It’s time we take a stand—together,” he said above the Telegram link.
Those scrolling through World Liberty Financial’s Telegram posts are greeted by a warning. “Attention, everyone! We have been made aware of some ads circulating on Telegram claiming to be from us, offering fake airdrops or token sales,” World Liberty Financial said in an August 29 post on Telegram. “Please do NOT click on any ads or links that claim to be associated with World Liberty Financial. We are NOT doing any airdrops or selling any tokens at this time.”
Scammers are taking out ads and placing them on World Liberty Financial’s channel in an effort to drive traffic to their own channel. It’s been working. As of this writing, the official World Liberty Financial channel has 230,000 followers. The scam account seen in the advertisements had 50,000. Inside the scam channel, followers are asked to open up their crypto wallet for a chance to win $15,000.
“Stay Safe!” The official Trump crypto Telegram channels says. “Only trust information that comes directly from this channel.”
“For your safety, remember that all official information will only be posted right here in this channel by our trusted team,” the scam channel says.
